Newham Students Shine

The outstanding achievements and talents of Newham’s young people were honoured in November at the 10th Shining Through awards ceremony.

The awards, run by Newham Council, recognise the achievements of the borough’s young people in the fields of creativity, young active citizen, young sports person, academic excellence, student or apprentice of the year and young person of the year. Emma Barnes and Hanna Nilson from Newham College were amongst the winners,
chosen from more than 260 entries from schools, colleges, youth clubs, and sport organisations.

Both of the young women stood out in a new category for 16-19 year olds who are studying for the applied learning element of their diplomas and apprenticeships.
Hanna’s standard of work has been consistent throughout the program, and she has worked extremely hard to combat her language barrier. Emma’s standard of work has
risen dramatically also. Both of the women represent and demonstrate the kind of work ethic that is admired in any field of work, and makes them both very deserved winners.
