Selection ProcessYou can expect your application to follow a clear selection process and details of this can be found on these pages. How we undertake shortlisting and what to expect at interview are covered here and details of any testing and practical assessment we may use and what happens if you receive a job offer. Shortlisting Once a job vacancy has been advertised and has reached the closing date, we will shortlist candidate using the person specification. The shortlisting process may take up to two weeks and shortlisted candidates will be contact to be invited to attend an interview. Please allow up to four weeks or more before contacting us regarding your submitted application. In some cases we may seek references prior to your interview - please state clearly on your application form if we do not have permission from you to do this. Interviews Interviews at Newham College are normally conducted by a panel who will include the line manager, and perhaps more senior members of the Faculty/Directorate. Every effort is made to ensure that members of interview panels are not all from one gender or racial group, however this cannot always be guaranteed. Testing and Practical Assessment Testing and practical assessment may be used in the following ways:
Job Offers From the application form, interview and assessment, the successful candidate is selected. Once we have obtained all the necessary pre-employment checks, we will issue a formal offer of employment. If you are relocating from another country, we will then start the process of requesting a work permit, although you may still need to obtain a Visa or other permit to remain in the UK. Members of the UK and EU will need to provide proof of their right to work in the UK. New appointees are subject to a probationary period before the appointment is confirmed. Pre-employment checks Once an offer has been made there are a number of pre-employment checks that need to be carried out. These are:
Criminal Records Bureau Some posts within the College are exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (1974) (exemption) Order 1975. We may, through the Criminal Records Bureau, make a check to establish any criminal record upon offer of employment. A criminal record may not necessarily mean a bar to employment with the College. Newham College of Further Education complies with the Criminal Records Bureau’s Code of Practice. A copy of the Code of Practice is available on request to the College or from the Criminal Records Bureau’s website www.crb.gov.uk
